Snuggles and Cuddles

It has been found that kittens & cats, puppies and dogs, in shelters are happier, less stressed, more relaxed, and feel more secure and less fearful, when they have a nice clean blanket in their cages with them.

With the thousands of animals in our counties in shelters at any given time, and considering the blankets must be removed for washing every day and replaced with a fresh one, the need is awesome!

SNUGGLES & CUDDLES is another project Girl Scouts might choose for community action.  We can fix this problem just like we fixed the Baby Basics situation, when we heard there were little babies who needed formula and diapers . . . Girl Scouts have given community agencies and churches over 400,000 diapers and over 300,000 servings of baby food and formula since the Baby Basics project started!

How to Participate
Just mentioning the project and the need for blankets, bedspreads and comforters to friends and family will usually result in plenty of supplies.  Ask for donations of thread too.

  1. Snuggles (for cats & kittens), and Cuddles, for puppies and dogs, should be 36 x 36  or  36 x 20

Cut blankets or thin quilted bedspreads to 38 x 38 inches.

Turn the edge under twice, to put frayed edge inside, then stitch.

Plush comforters are cut to 38 x 20

Fiberfill is trimmed back about one inch, and then edge is folded under and stitched. Throw away any damaged or stained pieces of fabric
  2. Small 20 x 20 pieces of can be used for kittens, too

Things to keep in mind:

Call the any of the agencies listed, or your own favorite, to arrange for the girls to go to the shelter to actually meet the kittens and puppies, cats and dogs who will be receiving the Snuggles and Cuddles they made.  Some agencies may not be able to have the girls visit, but would welcome the Snuggles and Cuddles.  We recommend that you call first.Agencies who have told us they welcome the girls visit, as well as their Snuggles and Cuddles are following, but we urge troops to locate others as well:
